George Beggs The Land Institute Prairie Festival 2012 These images were made in September 2012 at the Land Institute Prairie Festival outside of Salina, Kansas. They aim to capture the relaxed nature of the event and its setting in and around an old barn in a gentle farm landscape. The Land Institute is dedicated to developing new perennial strains of cereal grains which, like the native grasses of the prairie have deep root systems which hold water, require no fertilizer and are not plowed annually. The global potential savings in fuel and water of such food plants is immense. Each year the Prairie Festival features speakers who address topics ranging from plant and food science to ecology to climate change to the philosophy of land care and more. This year saw the largest attendence to date, with 1,200 visitors from many states and foreign countries. In particular, the speakers included Wendell Berry, the noted poet and argicultural philospher, David Orr, a noted author on subjects including sustainability and Wes Jackson, the MacArthur prize winning founder of The Land Institute. This year also saw the installation of a marvelous large art piece, the Hedge Fire Circle by sculptor Bill McBride. It is featured in several of the photographs below.
